The Sheriff’s Posse (which the Jeep Posse is part) is a completely voluntary organization. As with most volunteer organizations you will be donating not only your time but money as well. The good news is that all training is provided free-of-charge by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. This training would cost several thousand dollars if you were to take is privately. Posse Training typically occurs during the evening on weekdays or weekends.
Below is a list of the typical things you will be paying for. You do NOT need to have all of this starting day one. The best method is to purchase it as you progress along with your training. In addition, while going through posse training you will frequently encounter people leaving the posse (retirement, moving, etc) and can pick up items used at a considerable cost savings.
Please note that the Sheriff’s Office has an extensive list of what is authorized (manufacturers/models) so don’t purchase anything until you know it is on the approved list.
All equipment purchased for use with the posse is fully tax deductible as a charity expense.
Some typical items (by no means exhaustive) you can expect to pay for:
· Textbooks & Materials ($40): Certain training classes have required textbooks and materials which you will need to purchase.
· Class B uniform ($200-$250): Shirt, Pants, Boots, Name Plate
· Equipment Belt ($300-$600): Includes Duty Belt, Under Belt, Belt Keepers, OC Spray Holder, Baton Holder, Handcuff Case, Flashlight Case, Magazine Pouch, Holster. Costs vary a lot based upon leather vs. nylon gear. It is best to start off by just getting the Duty Belt and Under Belt, then add the other cases/holders as you start those classes.
· Traffic Vest ($25): Required for the Traffic Class as well as anytime you are directing traffic
· Flashlight with traffic wand ($25): a 3 D-Cell MagLite is pretty much the standard.
· Handcuffs ($40): Only required when you start the Mechanical Restraints class
· Baton ($60): Only required when you start the Baton class (which is an optional class)
· Firearm ($400-???): This is only required when you start your QAP certification (Firearm’s Academy). The MCSO Approved Weapon list is extensive and if you already own a handgun, it may be on the approved list.
· VHF handheld radio ($200): Also known as (a.k.a.) a Channel 8 radio. This radio is used by the posse and Search & Rescue. All Jeep Posse members are required to have one.
· 800mhz radio ($1500-$3500): This is NOT required although as you become more active you may want to purchase one. This radio is the standard radio used by MCSO for regular communications. When working certain functions you may be issued this radio.
· Vehicle Emergency Equipment ($800-???): once you join the Jeep Posse and have completed all of your training, you will be expected to equip your vehicle such that it can be used as an emergency vehicle when called upon to do so. This includes Emergency Lights, Siren, First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, Road Flares, Tow Strap, etc. The Jeep Posse will provide you with information regarding your vehicle.
· .Additional Equipment ($500-???): The more you are active as a posse member, the more you will find additional equipment that will make your life easier (or is just ‘cool’ to have)
IMPORTANT: You cannot carry certain equipment (OC Spray, Baton, handcuffs, firearm, etc) UNTIL you have successfully completed training for that equipment. Violation of this policy will result in immediate termination from the posse program.
