How Do I Join The Jeep Posse ?

Most people will fall into one of three categories:

1. New to the Sheriff’s Office Posse Program.

2. Already a member of another posse but do not have Qualified Armed Posseman (QAP) status.

3. Already a member of another posse and have Qualified Armed Posseman (QAP) status.

New to the Sheriff’s Office Posse Program:

You will need to contact the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (602-876-1000) and let them know you are interested in becoming a posse member. You will be asked to attend an Posse Orientation meeting which should answer all of your initial questions.  Posse Orientation meetings are typically held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm at the Sheriff’s Training Facility Auditorium (2627 S. 35th Avenue, Phoenix AZ).

Some basic requirements are:

18 years of age (no maximum)

No Criminal History

Citizen of Maricopa County

As part of processing your application to join the posse, a background check will be performed.  A drug and polygraph test will also be performed.

It typically takes between 12 and 18 months to obtain all of the necessary training in order to become a Jeep Posse member.

Already a Posse Member (Non-QAP):

Great!!! You already have all the preliminary work out of the way.  Contact any of the Jeep Posse members and let them know you are interested in joining our group.  Feel free to attend one of our Membership meetings that are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Sheriff’s Enforcement Support building (3325 W. Durango, Phoenix AZ) at 7:00pm.  Be prepared to ask us questions (and answer some too).  If you believe that you would like to join, you need to do the following:

1. Inform your current Posse Commander.  They will need to send a Letter-of-Transfer to the Jeep Posse Commander stating that you are in good standing with your posse.

2. Upon transfer, you will become a probationary Jeep Posse member subject to your successfully being accepted and completing your QAP training. This must be done within 12 months of transfer.

3. Complete the Jeep Posse Field Training program (FTO).  Your training records, FTO evaluations, and posse work history will be reviewed by the Jeep Posse Governing Board.  If deemed satisfactory, you will be recommended to the Jeep Posse membership for voting on as a full member.

4. Complete the Search & Rescue Academy (if not already done so).
